Paul Borchers

Personal Training Supervisor/Gym and Boxing Circuit Instructor.

I have been working within Body and Soul since I tried out through work placement late in 2005 starting casually not long after that (this is when the gym was located at its previous premises). I started as a gym floor instructor and spread my time between owner Melynda Tempest’s two premises Body and Soul and Wizeguys (Men’s only Gym) where I gained valuable experience. My tasks included fitness assessments, program writing, reception duties and basic circuit training. Only being a couple of years out of school I found the transition into Personal Training a little difficult as developing clients was hard, although fully qualified many people saw me as too young. I developed the odd client but mainly focused on my program writing and general confidence on the gym floor.

Wizeguys closed in June 2007 as owner Melynda Tempest had an eye to the future, being the expansion of Body and Soul. In October 2007 the ‘All New’ Body and Soul Health and Fitness Studio was opened – it was bigger, brighter and was a very exciting time. The opening of the new gym for me was also the next step in my own development.

Having the bigger premises of course drew a bigger crowd and I decided I needed to act upon these numbers to boost my ‘slowly’ increasing personal training client numbers. I knew I could train clients to achieve desired results as I had been preparing for this role from High School through to university, all I needed was for people to give the ‘young guy’ a go instead of the older “experienced” staff. I was able to give some mates and family free sessions so members could see I knew what I was doing and slowly but surely my client base grew…and so did I which, by mid 2008 I had earned the title of ‘Personal Training Supervisor’.

I am very passionate about my Fitness and that of others. I have never been afraid to try new things and encourage this to my clients. On top of my current qualifications I have undertaken extra training and always keep an eye out for new developments in the way of fitness and healthy eating. As a Fitness Professional there is only one way to see what works and what doesn’t and that is TRY TRY TRY! Personally I would never give my clients an exercise I cannot do or haven’t tried, this is another reason that young (qualified) trainers should never be over looked.

If I had some advice for those looking to get ‘Fit and Healthy’ or improve on their current fitness levels I would start basic and suggest just three things to make a difference.

1) See a chance to move as an opportunity in life and not as a drag or a massive effort – some people would love nothing more than to walk and get the paper.
2) Hold your Fitness at a high standard – pay the gym membership or buy personal training session to get the kick up the bum you need…this may mean one night off the beer or one less outfit but in the long run you will feel better about yourself and fit into an even better outfit.
3) Variety – don’t get stuck in a rut doing the same thing day after day, mix it up with different weights, different classes, walk the dog on a different path and try new things. You will not only become fitter but avoid boredom at the same time.

Every day I share and learn with my clients doing something I love…Make, Create and Take your Opportunities.
